Our Story & Conservation Roots
In 1995, German educator Anneliese Schimmelpfennig travelled to Fiji to study local culture and education. During her visit, she discovered the former Malawai Bay Resort and was captivated by its pristine coastline, fertile land, and surrounding rainforest.
She purchased the property and renamed it Papageno Resort, inspired by Papageno—the nature-loving bird catcher from Mozart's The Magic Flute—a name that also honours her German heritage.
While living on Kadavu, Anneliese became aware that the island's native Shining Parrot was being captured for the exotic pet trade. Her advocacy helped bring about a ban on capturing the species. Today, the Shining Parrot remains the resort's logo, symbolising harmony between people, nature, and culture.
2024 Resort & Dive Facility Renovations
In 2024, Papageno Resort completed renovation, elevating guest comfort while enhancing the overall dive experience.

Getting to Papageno Resort & Dive
Your island adventure begins the moment you leave the mainland. Whether arriving by flight, seaplane, ferry, or private yacht, our team ensures a smooth, stress-free journey, finishing with a scenic 30-minute boat ride to the resort. Despite its remote setting, reaching Papageno is straightforward, with our team assisting every step of the journey.
By Air
Fly into Nadi or Suva with Fiji Airways or your preferred carrier, then connect to Kadavu's Vunisea Airport with Fiji Link. On arrival, you'll be met by our team for your boat transfer.
Private Charters
Private plane or helicopter charters are available via Island Hoppers Fiji or Turtle Airways Fiji, ideal for dive gear and flexible schedules.

Ferries from Suva offer a budget-friendly and truly local way to travel to Kadavu Island. Services are operated by Interlink Shipping and Goundar Shipping, arriving at Vunisea Port.
